Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a condition that involves multiple episodes of airway closure and/or reduction in airflow that effects 2-4% of the population. OSA has been associated with adverse medical conditions including congestive heart failure, stroke, pulmonary and systemic hypertension, cancer, and increased mortality. Traditionally, sleep apnea has been assessed via a nighttime polysomnogram. However, this technique can be cumbersome and expensive. Therefore, it is estimated that as many as 70% of individuals with sleep apnea go undiagnosed.


Matthew R. Ebben from Weill Cornell Medical College's Center for Sleep Medicine, discussed a method for diagnosing sleep apnea with oximetry data only (oximetry is a procedure used to measure the oxygen level or oxygen saturation in the blood), which could reduce the cost and make it more convenient to screen for sleep disordered breathing, which himself along with his colleague Ana C. Krieger, developed.
